3D Lettering Signs

If your sign is mostly a name rather than a symbol, the letters have to do all the work. 3D lettering means each letter is cut as its own piece and raised off the backing, so the wordmark has genuine depth instead of being printed onto a flat panel.

What dimensional letters give you

  • A real shadow line under every letter, which is what makes text readable from across a room
  • Weight you can choose. Thicker stock throws a heavier shadow and reads closer to cast metal. Thinner reads cleaner and more modern
  • Any typeface, including script and handwritten wordmarks
  • Color per letter if your mark needs it

Script and handwritten wordmarks

Script logos are the interesting technical problem in wood. A handwritten wordmark has hairline strokes connecting the letters, and at true scale those are fragile both on the machine and afterwards on the wall.

The fix is to thicken the thinnest strokes very slightly, by an amount small enough that nobody looking at the finished sign would notice, but enough that the piece holds together as one solid object. We show you the adjusted artwork on the proof before anything is cut, so you approve the change rather than discover it.

Choosing a size

Letter height matters more than total width. A three letter name at 24 inches has big bold letters. An eight letter name at the same width has small ones. Send us the wording and we will show you the real proportions rather than guessing.

  • Reception or counter, read from 8 to 15 feet: 24 to 36 inches wide
  • Main lobby wall, read from the entrance: 36 to 48 inches
  • Large or double height space: 48 up to 60 inches, which is larger than most makers can produce or ship

Common questions

Can you cut any font?
Effectively yes. Very fine serifs and hairline scripts get a small adjustment for strength, shown to you on the proof.

How thick are the letters?
Standard is 1/4 inch stock. Ask for thicker if you want a heavier shadow.

Can letters mount straight to the wall with no backing board?
Yes. Individually mounted letters read as if the wordmark was applied directly to the wall. Tell us at quote stage.
