Contractors are a hard audience for a sign, because they can see how it was made. Anyone who
builds for a living will look at a sign and clock the joinery, the finish and whether the edges
are clean. A cheap sign in a builder’s office undercuts the pitch.

The project
A contracting company came to us with a mark in white, silver and red. We built it contour
cut, with two layers stacked on top of the base, three layers of wood in total.
That is more construction than most signs need, and it was the right call here. Their logo
has distinct elements sitting at different visual depths. Flattening it onto a single plane
would have lost the relationship between them. Stacking the layers puts that hierarchy back
physically, so the mark has a foreground and a background rather than being one flat outline.

What layers actually do
| Build | What it looks like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single layer, engraved | Flat, the design burned into the surface | Simple text, tight budgets |
| Two layer (base + logo) | Logo raised off a panel, one shadow line | Most business signs, the standard build |
| Three layer | Elements at different heights, multiple shadow lines | Logos with real depth or an outlined mark |
| Contour cut, no base | Only the logo shape, mounted straight to the wall | Strong silhouettes, minimal look |
Each layer adds cutting, alignment and glue-up time, so it does affect the price. The honest
guidance: two layers is right for most logos. Go to three when the mark genuinely has an inner
and outer element, like an outlined shape or a badge with a border. Do not add layers for their
own sake, because past a point the shadows start competing with the design instead of serving it.

What construction businesses need from a sign
- Visible build quality. Your clients notice joinery. It is their job.
- High contrast. Site offices and showrooms are visually busy.
- Durability. These are working environments, not quiet lobbies.
- Scales across sites. Office, yard, showroom and hoarding often need the
same mark at very different sizes.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know how many layers my logo needs?
Send it over. We will tell you honestly, including when two layers will look just as good as
three for less money.
Do the layers separate over time?
No. They are bonded, not fixed with hardware, and the assembly is what most of the build time
goes into.
Can a three layer sign go outdoors?
Yes, with an exterior clear coat. Add several days for cure time between coats.
Can you match paint to our brand red?
Yes. Every color is hand mixed against your reference.
See yours before you commit

colors before anything is cut. Family run, made by hand in California.
