Custom License Plate Signs and Novelty Shapes in Laser Cut Wood

Not every sign is for a business. Some of the most enjoyable pieces we make are one-offs: a
joke that needed to exist, a gift with a private meaning, a thing somebody wanted on their wall
for reasons that make sense only to them.

This custom license plate sign is one of those.

Giant custom license plate sign in painted white with gray and orange lettering
Built as an oversized license plate frame, painted white with gray and orange lettering

The project: a license plate at wall scale

The brief was a West Virginia plate reading ALMST HVN, built at wall size rather than car size.
Painted white base, gray and orange lettering, constructed to look like a plate sitting inside a
frame.

The frame is what makes it work. A flat rectangle with plate lettering on it would just be a
sign about license plates. Building the outer frame as a separate layer, with the plate face set
inside it, recreates the actual object. That is the difference between a graphic and a replica, and
it is entirely a construction decision rather than a design one.

Painted white rather than a stain was correct here too. Real plates are printed on flat coated
metal, and visible wood grain would have undermined the illusion. This is one of the few cases
where hiding the material is the right call.

What shapes can be cut in wood

Shape type Feasible? Notes
Rectangles, squares, circles Straightforward The standard builds
Custom silhouette from your artwork Yes Contour cut follows any outline you supply
Replica objects (plates, badges, crests) Yes Layering is what sells the illusion
Very thin projecting elements With adjustment Fine points and hairlines get thickened slightly for strength
Interlocking or free floating pieces Yes, mounted individually More assembly and mounting work
Enclosed shapes with tiny interior cutouts Usually Very small internal holes may need enlarging
Shapes wider than 60 inches No 60 inches on the long side is our maximum

The practical limit is not the outline, it is the thinnest part of it. If any element of a
custom shape wall sign is thinner than a few millimeters at final size, it needs
thickening or scaling up. We flag that on the proof rather than discovering it at the machine.

Briefing an unusual piece

  • Send a reference image of the real object if you are replicating something.
  • Say what the piece is for. A gift, a bar, a garage and a shop all want
    different scale.
  • Tell us the wall. Novelty pieces are often bigger than people expect.
  • Be clear about the joke. If a detail carries the meaning, we need to know so it
    does not get simplified away.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a giant version of a license plate?
Yes, up to 60 inches on the long side. Building the frame as a separate layer is what makes it read
as a plate rather than a picture of one.

Can you cut any shape I send?
Almost. Very thin elements need slight thickening for strength, and we will show you any change
before cutting.

Do you make one-off gifts?
Yes. Plenty of what we make is a single piece for one person.

Can it go outdoors?
With an exterior clear coat, yes. Novelty pieces usually live indoors but the option is there.

How long does a custom shape take?
About a week for interior, plus proof time. Complex multi layer pieces take longer.
