A custom homestead sign is one of the few signs people order expecting it to
outlast them. It carries a family name, usually a date, and it goes on a property that is meant to
stay in the family. That changes what matters about it.
Which means the finishing decision is more important than the design decision.
The project: aged walnut and white
A homestead came to us for a family homestead wood sign. Aged walnut base,
white lettering.
Aged walnut is the natural fit for rural property. It sits in the same tonal range as barn
timber, fencing and weathered cedar, so it belongs on the building rather than being applied to
it. White lettering keeps the name readable from a distance, which on a property with a long drive
is the whole point.
It also ages sympathetically. Light stains show weathering as patchiness, while a mid to dark
walnut just deepens, and on a sign meant to be there in twenty years that is the more forgiving
choice.
Interior build versus exterior build
This is the decision that determines whether a sign lasts two seasons or twenty years, and it
has to be made before anything is cut.

If there is any chance the sign goes outside, choose the exterior build. Adding a clear coat
later to a sign that was not prepared for it is not a straightforward job.

Making an outdoor homestead sign last
- Shelter multiplies its life. Under an eave, a porch or a gateway roof beats
open exposure by years. - Face it away from the prevailing weather where you have the choice.
- Mid and dark stains age better than white wash and natural outdoors.
- Go larger than feels right. Outdoors there is nothing to give scale, and a
drive entrance sign should read from a slow moving vehicle. - Recoat before it looks like it needs it. A fresh coat every two or three
seasons is far cheaper than a replacement.
