Nutrition and integrative health brands tend to use a lot of color. Fruit, vegetables,
botanicals and whole food imagery all push a palette toward bright and varied, which is lovely on
a website and genuinely demanding when it has to be cut and painted in wood.
A nutritionist office sign with six colors in it is a different build to one
with two, and it is worth understanding why before you order.

The project: a multi color mark on white wash
A nutrition practice came to us with one of the more colorful logos we have built, destined for
their office wall. White wash base.
The base decision was straightforward and important. When a logo is carrying a lot of color,
the panel behind it has to do nothing at all. Any stain with real character competes, and the
result is busy. White wash is the quietest base we make that still shows grain, so the mark gets
to be the only interesting thing on the wall.
Each color in that logo was mixed by hand against the brand reference and applied separately,
with masking between. That is the part clients rarely picture. A multi color logo wood
sign is not painted in one pass. It is built up color by color, and each one has to dry
before the next can be masked and applied.

How many colors can a wood sign carry?
| Colors in the logo | What it means for the build | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| One | Single mix, single coating pass | Fastest and cheapest |
| Two | Two mixes, masking between | Small addition, the most common build |
| Three to four | Multiple mixes, several masking stages | Noticeable addition to time and cost |
| Five or more | Each color mixed, masked, applied and dried in turn | Significant, and worth discussing at proof stage |
| Gradients | Blended by hand across the cut pieces | Slowest element of any build |
There is no hard limit on colors. There is a point where it is worth asking whether every
color earns its place at sign scale, and we will say so if we think simplifying one or two
elements would look better on a wall than a faithful reproduction of a logo designed for screen.

What nutrition and wellness practices need
- A base that gets out of the way when the logo is doing the work.
- Accurate color, since food and botanical palettes are recognisable and a poor
match is obvious. - Warm and approachable, not clinical.
- Sized for a consulting room, which is usually smaller than a medical waiting
area.
Frequently asked questions
How many colors can you put in a wood sign?
As many as the logo needs. Each is hand mixed and applied separately, so more colors means more
build time and more cost. The proof shows you exactly how it will look first.
Can you do gradients?
Yes, painted by hand across the cut pieces. It is the slowest thing we do, and it is the only way
to get a true blend in wood.
Will a busy logo look cluttered at sign size?
Sometimes. We will tell you honestly and suggest which elements to simplify if we think it will
read better.
What base suits a colorful logo?
White wash or natural. Save characterful stains for simpler marks.
How long does a multi color sign take?
Longer than a single color, because each color has to dry before the next is masked and applied.
Budget extra time.
