Most of our park style signs are stained. The wood grain shows through, the brown and cream
look warm and a little rustic, and that suits a cabin door or a campsite perfectly.
But some designs need colors that stain simply cannot make. This one is a good example: a
painted national park style sign in chocolate brown, cream and a deep teal, made
for a map room.

The project: a map room sign with park colors
The layout follows the classic park entrance shape: a dark upper panel with a script name, a
smaller line in block capitals underneath, and a light lower panel carrying the room name. The
arrowhead emblem in the corner holds a small scene, with a pine tree, a snowcapped peak, and a
bear walking along the shoreline.
The teal is what makes it. It picks out the water and the tree inside the arrowhead and gives
the whole sign a pop of color that reads from across the room. There is no stain that gets birch
to that shade, so the sign was built in our painted finish instead.

How a painted park sign is built
Painted signs are made the same way as our stained ones. Every letter and every piece of the
emblem is laser cut from Baltic birch as a separate part. The difference is that each part is
painted its color before it is glued down, rather than stained.
Because the color is applied piece by piece, the edges stay crisp. The cream lettering sits on
top of the brown background as a raised layer, so you get clean color separation and a real
shadow under every letter, not a printed outline.

Stained or painted: which should you choose?
| Stained | Painted | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Wood grain shows through, warm and rustic | Even, solid color with a cleaner finish |
| Color range | Natural wood tones: walnut, oak, ebony, gray, navy | Almost any color, including bright accents like teal, red or white |
| Best for | Cabins, campsites, porches, a classic park feel | Room signs, wedding signs, logos, designs with specific colors |
| Outdoor clear coat | Slightly darkens the stain | Does not change the paint color |
| Cost | Included in the price | Small additional cost on the product page |
A simple rule: if the colors you want are wood colors, go stained. If you have a color you
cannot picture in wood, like a team color, a wedding palette, or teal water in the emblem, go
painted.

Park style signs are not just for the front door
Most people order these with a family name and an established year for the entrance of a home
or cabin. This one shows the format works just as well inside. Swap the name line for a room and
you have a sign that gives a space its own personality:
- Map room or study, like this one
- Game room or man cave, with an inside joke on the bottom line
- Kids’ bedroom or playroom, with their name and a favorite animal in the arrowhead
- Home office, for anyone who would rather be on a trail
- Garage or workshop, which pairs well with an exterior clear coat
- Wedding welcome sign, with the couple’s names, the venue town and the date
The top line is yours too. We have made signs that name a favorite park, a family camp, a
made-up forest, or a backyard. These are personalized signs inspired by the look of park
entrance signs. They are not official park signs and are not affiliated with the National Park
Service.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose my own paint colors?
Yes. Tell us the colors you have in mind in the notes, or send a photo of the palette, and we
will match them as closely as we can in your proof.
Can I mix paint and stain on one sign?
Park style signs are usually all stained or all painted. If you want one part in color, like a
painted emblem in the arrowhead on a stained sign, mention it in the notes as a special request
and we will let you know what is possible. Our rectangular signs already pair a stained
background with painted lettering.
Can a painted sign go outside?
Yes, with the exterior clear coat option. It protects the paint and does not shift the color the
way it slightly darkens a stain.
What goes in the arrowhead?
Choose from our icons, like a bear, bison, tent, campfire, deer or eagle, or send your own
silhouette or logo and we will work it into the emblem.
What sizes are available?
The park style sign comes in 18 x 11, 23 x 15 and 34 x 22 inches. For a room sign, 18 or 23
inches wide is usually right.
See your colors before we cut
Send the wording, the colors and the emblem you want, and we will send a free digital
proof so you can see the painted version before anything is made. Every sign is cut,
finished and assembled by hand in California.
